The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin is accepting applications for a non tenure-track position to serve as its Instructor of Technical Theatre and Technical Director. The applicant must have a terminal degree (MFA Theatrical Design or Technology preferred) or a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre plus commensurate professional experience in theatre production. The successful candidate will have experience in one or more of the following areas: technical direction, scenery construction, rigging systems, shop supervision, project management, budget preparation, creating shop drawings, mechanized/automated scenery, including motor control, welding, hydraulics, and pneumatics, as well as experience with lighting, sound, and projection technology. This position will instruct students in technical production, oversee graduate and undergraduate students during the production process and teach courses in Technical Theatre.
The successful candidate will teach and assist with events manufacturing, installation and personnel associated with all technical elements for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Working in concert with Texas Performing Arts, this position will coordinate all phases of theatrical scenic production, including manufacturing, installation and maintenance for the department’s production season. Duties will include overseeing the purchasing of materials and cost estimates for scenery and scenic painting, creating technical drawings for scene shop, planning and supervising all load-ins and strikes for productions and events/projects in the Winship Building including lighting, sound and projection. Further responsibilities consist of oversight for non-season departmental events/projects, including scenic and technical installation and general operations. The person in this position also ensures and implements scene shop safety procedures, including training, inspection, equipment and space maintenance.
This is a nine-month full-time, non-tenured lecturer appointment, with full benefits and competitive salary. This position requires relocation to Austin, TX, however ongoing professional work is encouraged. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience. Expected start date: January 16, 2014, but may begin at an earlier date.
